Where Toraja is
Toraja sits in the mountains of South Sulawesi, north of Makassar. The two main towns are Rantepao in Toraja Utara and Makale in Tana Toraja; most visitors stay in or around Rantepao. The landscape is green and steep, with rice terraces, bamboo and limestone outcrops.
Tongkonan houses
The Tongkonan is the ancestral family house of the Torajan people, raised on piles, with a curved roof that rises at both ends like a boat. Families keep their Tongkonan for generations, and the carved and painted panels on the walls carry meaning about status and lineage. Rows of rice barns, smaller but similar in shape, usually stand opposite the houses.
Ke'te' Kesu' is one of the best-known villages to see them, with burial sites a short walk away.
Burial sites: Lemo, Londa and Loko Mata
Toraja is famous for the way it honours the dead. Some of the sites you can visit:
- Lemo: tombs carved into a limestone cliff, watched over by balconies of tau-tau, wooden effigies of the deceased.
- Londa: natural burial caves at the foot of a cliff, with coffins inside and outside the caves.
- Loko Mata: a large boulder on the mountain slopes, carved with family graves.
- Bori' Kalimbuang: a ceremonial field of standing megaliths linked to funeral rites.
These are active family sites, not museums. Visit with a local guide who can explain what you are seeing and the rules for each place.
Toraja funerals (Rambu Solo')
Funeral ceremonies in Toraja can last several days and gather whole communities. They are family events, held according to the local calendar, and cannot be booked. If a ceremony takes place during your visit, your guide may be able to ask the hosting family whether visitors are welcome.
- Dress modestly in dark or neutral colours.
- Bring a small gift if your guide suggests it, and follow their lead.
- Ask before photographing people, and never during private moments.
