The airport
Sam Ratulangi International Airport (IATA code MDC) lies northeast of Manado. It handles domestic routes to Jakarta, Bali, Makassar and other Indonesian cities, and some international routes, including direct flights to Singapore. Schedules change often, so check with the airlines when you book.
From the airport to the city
- By car: about 30–40 minutes to central Manado, longer at rush hour.
- Taxi and ride-hailing: official airport taxis are available; ride-hailing apps also operate in Manado.
- With us: airport pickup and drop-off are part of our tours, for example on the Tomohon Highland Trip.
Getting around North Sulawesi
Distances are short compared to the rest of Sulawesi, but public transport to the sights is limited. Most visitors use a private car with a driver:
- Bunaken: by boat from Manado's harbour, roughly 30–45 minutes.
- Tomohon and Lake Linow: about an hour into the hills south of Manado.
- Tangkoko and Bitung: about two hours by road to the east coast.
- Likupang: on the northern tip, beaches and islands.
Where to go first
If you arrive in the morning, a day in the Tomohon highlands is an easy start: cool air, Lake Linow and a Minahasan lunch. If you arrive late, rest in Manado and go to Bunaken the next morning, when the sea is usually calmer.

Things to do in Manado itself
- Walk the seafront at sunset with Manado Tua on the horizon.
- Try tinutuan for breakfast and grilled fish in the evening (see our Minahasan food guide).
- Use the city as a base for day trips to Bunaken, Tomohon and Tangkoko.
