Togean Islands guide: how to get there and what to expect

In briefThe Togean (or Togian) Islands are an archipelago in the Gulf of Tomini, Central Sulawesi, known for coral reefs, Bajau stilt villages and very few visitors. Getting there takes a full day: the most reliable route is a flight to Luwuk, about five hours by road to Ampana, then a boat to the islands. Ferries are infrequent, so plan your dates around them.

Where the Togean Islands are

The islands lie in the middle of the Gulf of Tomini, the large bay enclosed by Sulawesi's northern and eastern arms. They belong to Central Sulawesi and are protected as a national park. The main settlements are Wakai and Malenge, and accommodation is mostly in small beach bungalows on the outer islands.

How to get to the Togean Islands

There is no airport on the islands, so every route ends with a boat:

  • Via Luwuk and Ampana: fly to Luwuk (LUW), drive about five hours to Ampana, then take the boat to Wakai or your island. Travel guides describe this as the most reliable route, because Luwuk has daily flights.
  • Via Gorontalo: an overnight ferry sails from Gorontalo to Wakai on a few days a week. If a ferry is out of service for repairs, there may be no replacement, so keep a buffer day.
  • Private boat charter: possible from Ampana and between the islands, faster and more flexible than the public boats.

Book your accommodation before you travel and tell them which boat you will take: most places arrange the pickup from Wakai or Ampana.

What to do

  • Snorkeling and diving on fringing reefs, walls and bommies, often right in front of your bungalow.
  • Island hopping between beaches and small islets by boat.
  • Bajau villages: the Bajau, sea-faring people, live in villages built on stilts over the water. Visit with a local guide and respect people's homes.
  • Kayaking where available, and simply slowing down: electricity, signal and internet are limited on many islands.

How long to stay

Because the journey takes a full day each way, plan at least four nights on the islands. The Togeans combine well with the Banggai Islands or Lake Poso on a longer trip through Central Sulawesi.

Practical tips

  • Bring enough cash: ATMs are rare outside Ampana, Luwuk and Gorontalo.
  • Pack reef-friendly sunscreen, a torch and a light rain jacket.
  • National park fees apply; ask for the current amount when you plan.
  • Keep one buffer day before an international flight.
